“We’re sitting front row at nature’s symphony show.”

What a lovely line, right? I felt it was appropriate to get this party started with the song lyric that inspired this very blog.

When I first heard it, on a random Spotify playlist for kids that I popped on to avoid death by Baby Shark, I did an auditory double take. First of all, was this delightful vocalist also the singer from The Postal Service/Death Cab for Cutie? A quick Google search told me no, it was not Ben Gibbard.

It turns out that this clever and beautifully written song called, “The Bullfrog Opera” was by The Okee Dokee Brothers. As a huge Tommy Boy fan, I smiled at their name. Okee dokee, gotcha thanks! We don’t take….no prisoners! Tommy want wingee. Brothers don’t shake hands, brothers gotta hug!

And getting back to brothers, The Okee Dokee Brothers are two childhood friends who grew up together in Denver. They perform Americana Folk music, specifically for children. They don’t have a catalog of content for grown-ups with an occasional kid appropriate song, it’s ALL for kids. They’ve even won a Grammy, which is no surprise because they’re talented as F.

The more I listened to “The Bullfrog Opera” and read up on these guys, the more I fell in awe. I don’t think a song has ever painted such a vivid picture in my mind. A catchy melody and lyrics that inspire the imagination...

“We’ve got Broadway tickets to see a chorus line of crickets” I mean c’mon. That’s perfect.

How on earth did I not realize there’s a scene for children’s music that isn’t just tolerable, it’s wildly enjoyable. For adults! Why didn’t anyone tell me this? WHY?! I’m a musician myself and I still wasn’t fully aware. I’ve been suffering through robot-made toddler anthems for years now when fantastic music was out there in the universe for the listening.

And so, a blog is born.

I’ll be taking a journey through children’s music as a new enthusiast, and I’ll be sharing my excitement about particular songs and/or artists right here, twice a month (or more if life allows!).

While I’m blogging about the amazing artists and songs I discover, I’ll also be working on becoming one myself, writing both music and picture books for kids (my first book will be released this summer, woot woot!). I’ve been a singer, songwriter, and performer for the majority of my adult life, with soul/funk/blues being my core competency. I was a small-town girl who moved to New York City with a lot of ambition and optimism and lived my dreams of performing there on a regular basis. Eventually I settled down in the Jersey suburbs, found success in the corporate world, made some tiny humans, and changed trajectory.

My goal is to inspire people to create magical moments with their kids through books and music. If you add “The Bullfrog Opera” or any future recommendation to your family song rotation and it encourages a singalong, I’ve succeeded.
